‘We are drowning in information but starved for knowledge’
John Naisbitt's famous quote mseems to be more true every day. There is so much information out there (and misinformation), but how do we interpret it, and what do we do with it.
We need to take information and turn it into insights that we can act upon. We then need to evaluate the impact of these actions. This is how we generate knowledge.
SNA Toolbox allows organisation to collect information not just about individual attitudes but also about the peer-to-peer connections between people. This gives us new information from which we can gain new insights. The challenge then is how do we act on these new insights. As experts in social connection, SNA Toolbox have significant experience in understanding the structures of peer-to-peer connections, what they mean, and how we might alter them. It is not easy. But data on peer-to-peer relations increases the ways in which organisations can intervene. Being able to track changes in relations over time, organisations can check the impact of their interventions.
For example, the corporate restructure is one of the most common intervention in organisations, but rarely if ever is it assessed by the changes it makes to peer-to-peer connections. This is hoped for, but usually never measured. If we do measure peer-to-peer relations, if we consider the implications of the structure of these relations, and then design interventions, and further, then measure these relations again, we are going to create significant new knowledge for such organisations. More data is necessarily a good thing, but appropriate and insightful data - that can bring knowledge and a range of other benefits with it.
